Another free service which uses wordpress is Blogono. You can choose from a variety of 2 column and 3 column templates, add google ads, adbrite ads just by adding your id, and add different wordpress plugins. It's an easy system to use, and you don't need any real html knowledge either.
Or you could try a free hosting service like 0fees.net. They have a Fantastico installer so you can install a Wordpress blog in around 5 minutes. It's quite easy and then you can upload plugins to your directory and different themes. I recommend this service if you want your own blog without being on a free Wordpress site as you can try out all the features before paying a web hosting service.
Another alternative is to use the Wordpress site itself and set up a free blog there. You can't add paid ads but you can add widgets from Widget Box and include boxes on your blog sidebars for ebay, amazon, commission junction and other shopping affiliate programs. This is probably the easiest way to get started with Wordpress and of course all the plugins work as sometimes when you do do your own blog not all the plugins work properly and it can be a bit annoying to have to keep redoing things
